How Big Do You Think the Internet Is?
Last year I wrote a post titled “The Dreaded P Word”. I’m sure you all conveniently forgot the little bit in there where I said I had something to share with you. Which is a good thing because sometimes life gets in the way of these things and it got pushed to the backburner. So NOW I’m able to share this with you.
I tend to read a fair number of blogs these days and one that I have read since my early blogging days is Simply Living. Susan also used to be a regular reader and commentor on my blog although I think her life got rather busy toward the end of last year.
Because Susan is a photographer and puts a lot of her photo’s on her blog, she has them watermarked with her name. I remember the name ringing a bell and *thought* I had an idea where I might have known the name from. I had intended to look up some old school photo’s to see if I could locate the name (not that they would have helped me as things turned out).
I wanted to ask her but felt a bit silly doing so. After all, I didn’t know if she’d still be using her maiden name or how many people in the world might have the same name. The internet is a rather large place after all. Isn’t it????
Then one day, flicking through some old photo’s looking for someone I had found on facebook, I came across a couple I had been given by my year 8 Greek teacher. On the back I’d written the names of those in the photo (I would never have remembered otherwise). One of the names was the same as that which had rung a bell to me on this blog.
So, I finally made a fairly general enquiring type comment to this blogger and we quickly discovered that it was HER in the photo’s. Turns out the internet isn’t as big as I first thought.
If you’d like to see some really embarrassing photo’s of me in year 8, you can find them on the post Small World on the Simply Living blog. It’s okay, she did ask my permission to post them. I figure if she’s game to put photo’s up with her in them, I’ll be brave too.
We had a fun time exchanging emails and reminiscing about those days. I left the school at the end of that year and she stayed on. So I was able to find out a few interesting facts about our peers. Including the fact that I never stood a chance with a certain male I was interested in (who was older than us). It would seem perhaps that girls weren’t his “thing”.
One thing still stands out in my mind when I view those photo’s. Who on earth in their right mind would design a WHITE school uniform for girls to wear???? Yes, our male counterparts found it hilarious to try and get us wet! Especially the guy that is almost cut off in the first photo.
Oh, and I don’t really have humungous feet. Some moron thought it would be wise to give me shoes in a bigger size to allow for growth. My feet are STILL the same size as they were in year 8 (okay, they’re a tiny bit bigger now but I never did grow into those hideous shoes).
That year was a really hard year for me. We moved from a country town in South Australia to big city Melbourne. I went straight from Primary School to second year high school so I didn’t have any orientation into high school whatsoever. I had to catch a public bus to school for the first time in my life (instead of simply walking). We had NO money. I used to go to school without breakfast and not have any lunch. One teacher I had for both Maths and PE did nothing but yell every time she opened her mouth. I was scared, alone and in general pretty freaked out.
This Greek class though was my favourite class. We had a lovely teacher (who was also my English teacher) and it was a nice small class (cos most of the kids in the school took advanced Greek). In the photo’s we’re practising a play - a really cool play where we got to give the guys a hard time. LOL. And they deserved it too!!!!
I *could* post the photo’s here as well but I think I’ll make you go and visit Susan if you want a peak.
