Conquering a Sugar Addiction
This week I am attempting to go 7 days without sugar!
Insane?
Probably.
Why?
I was finding my sugar intake was getting out of control.
Like I was compulsively eating honey crackles, one after the other after the other.
Then I’d make another batch because I felt guilty I was eating them all.
Then I’d compulsively EAT them!
It was getting to be a vicious cycle and I was OUT OF CONTROL!
I’m not very good at “depriving” myself so the thought of not eating sugar at all is something I didn’t think I could EVER do!
BUT, going off wheat was something I didn’t think I could ever do either and I’ve managed it (some weeks I do better than others but for the most part, I’m now wheat free and recognising the benefits to my body of being so).
So, the time seemed right to attempt a Sugar Detox.
The plan?
7 days without any sugar, sweetened foods or fruit.
I chose to cut out fruit as well for the 7 days to try and reduce the sweet cravings as quickly as I could.
7 days is a looonnnggg time!
Today is Day 5 though so I’m more than half way there.
The first 2 days were pretty horrible. I had awful headaches.
Day 3 and 4 weren’t too bad other than feeling constantly hungry. I can only assume that these were a form of craving as I was eating pretty reasonable sized meals that included protein.
Today is the worst day so far.
I’m not sure if it’s because I was expecting it to be easier after Day 4.
Or whether I didn’t really consider my monthly hormonal patterns when I suddenly decided to try this.
I tend to be a bit like that at times though.
No planning. No forethought. Just jump in boots and all.
LOL.
Oops.
Since I started though, I have been reading a lot about sugar addiction.
I think there might be something to all of this.
I am DETERMINED to make it through the 7 days.
After that, I’m not sure.
The plan was to reintroduce fruit and more natural sweeteners (like honey and agave syrup) and steer clear of white sugar.
I think though, it’s going to take a little more research and understanding (and baby steps) to really conquer my sugar addiction.
But, in the meantime, hopefully this week will reset my body so that I can at least eat LESS sugar.
And did you know vegetables taste a lot sweeter once you’re not eating sugar?

I’ve cut back on my sugar quite a bit, but I don’t think can go without all together. I just can’t have coffee without it.
Good on you!!!
Good for you love!! you can do this
When you’re getting back into sugar, just be aware that some fruits are very high in sugar and are meant to be eaten in moderation due to this, can’t recall which ones but think apricots was one of them
River - I think for some people, this is enough. My problem was I was out of control and had to do something drastic to try and reduce the cravings. Thankfully I drink my tea black, no sugar (don’t drink coffee).
Wendy - Thanks.
Dev - thanks for the encouragement. And thanks for the heads up on the no sugar challenge.
Katrina - yeah, I’ve been thinking about that and how to go about reintroducing fruit without kicking off my addiction again. Will have to play it by ear I think. Been hanging out for an orange!
What a great idea and a strong lady to start such a challenge.
I have been praying to have my tastebuds changed.. and for specific cravings to just go.. this may sound weird but I cant make such changes without Gods help. I need to have a brain renewal first.
Congrats again.. lets see how it goes.. I reckon winter is the hardest time and at those hormonal times.. like I keep telling you , you are such an inspiration.. !~
Lynette - I can understand that. I’ve been deliberating on making this step for about 5 years now (I’ve heard that white sugar can cause/increase depression in people susceptible) but never thought I could make the jump. Still not sure how long it will last but I’m happy I’ve at least done this much (and proved to myself it can be done even if it is short-term and just helps reset my sugar cravings).
Thanks for the encouragement!
