Family Fun With Blokus

We’re big on games in our family.

They’re great for quality time, lots of laughs and have many educational benefits too!

In fact, we have an entire cupboard full of games (not so full now that I’ve shifted some into the caravan for when we go away).

Some are more popular than others.

One game we all seem to enjoy is…

Blokus Board Game

It’s a strategy game where you each have a colour and can only add on to the corner of your own pieces.

The idea is to get as many of your pieces on the board as possible before you are completely blocked (and some of the pieces are shaped quite strangely).

It’s one of the few games we have that seems to balance out the age gap between our children (it does involve strategy and thinking but also quite a bit of luck that someone else doesn’t play where you want to go).

Right now, the kids are asking to play it most nights!

Aren’t I a self sacrificing mother, letting Singstar Princess have the red while I get boring YELLOW!  LOL.

While the game is designed for 2-4 players, my kids also like to play it solo.

Trailer Boy can spend hours just playing with the pieces like a puzzle, trying to fit them into the board and making patterns with the colours.

I do like me a game that can be used in more than 1 way!

What about your family?  Do you play board games together and which is your favourite?

I’m always interested in what works for others and always on the lookout for new games to add to our cupboard.

We gave up board games when we were little because *someone-not me* was a VERY poor loser and we hated having to let him win.
Later my mum tried to interest my kids in board games, but they declared them too boring and refused to play beyond one game. They did love Scrabble though and we often set up three boards and played right across the length of the table. We never bothered keeping score though.

Skipbo is a card game DH and I tend to pull out for a quick competitive time on a rainy day.
Small son and I still often just play Noughts and Crosses on a serviette at a coffee shop.. a little tradition! (sometimes in church too if he is bored)
SOmeone mentioned a good game to get is the Pirates of Carribean game that has a few dice in it.. I have not looked into it.

Wow! So many games I’ve never even heard of!

River - all kids are sore losers aren’t they? I keep making mine play games so they can learn not to be sore losers. I used to hate playing games because even if I won, I’d feel sorry for those who lost. It was a lose-lose situation for me.

Lynette - Squatter is an AWESOME game. Must pull that out again sometime.

Made an impulse buy of Blokus yesterday.. decided to use some birthday money on something fun. Popped into a friends place on way home from shop and even got to play my first game. Scoring is a bit hard isnt it? Do you keep score or sometimes just say the one with the most pieces down is the winner? Our winner was still in the negative!!! Shucks.. the scores could really be offputting on a bad day!

We never bother scoring. We just play games on an individual basis and declare the one with the least number of square the winner for that game.
