I Need A Hobby
This is not a new realisation.
I’ve always struggled with finding something I could just relax and enjoy doing.
I learnt piano for a while.
Until it became more of a “chore” than a “hobby”.
Netball is kind of a hobby.
Only at the moment I’m not enjoying it at all.
I am enjoying my coaching.
But it does take a lot out of me so I’m not sure if I can class it as a hobby or not.
At different times I’ve enjoyed doing some craft.
Right now I feel like my life is in a rut.
I am so over housework.
I’m just not really enjoying netball this year.
I can’t blog because my life feels so boring.
I just don’t know where to go from here.
I think I need to try something different.
Something new.
So, what kinds of things do you do as a hobby?
I could really do with some ideas or thoughts on how to get out of this rut.

I have done cardmaking, sewing, quilting, embroidery, birdwatching, cooking, Bible study (as an intellectual exercise as opposed to spiritual input), reading.. I still do a little of all of the above. I have friends who are passionate about family history and scrapbooking but neither of those appeal to me. It’s good to do something with other people. Oh, I also tutored adults at a local community centre in using the internet. What about some volunteer work maybe?
I have always been fairly crafty, and when my kids were small I did a bit of sewing and crafting stuff with them. But I never really felt I had a “hobby” that was all mine. My dh grows grapes, and makes wine, so his hobby became mine. But again, it never really felt like mine.
Just over a year ago now, I had a bit of a personal crisis, and it was suggested to me that I find myself a hobby. All my life I have wanted to do wood carving. Something about it calls to me. But I am not there yet. I had a look for classes, but wasn’t able to fit one in around my other responsibilities. And I had no idea where to start.
So, instead, I signed up for a life modelling course. Now I make clay sculptures of nude people. In the last year I have progressed from crying my way through my first lesson (I really felt lost and like I couldn’t do it), to my first gifted sculpture (I made something for a friend, and she cried).
What I am trying to say is - is there something that you have been drawn to? Something that you would like to try but maybe thought you wouldn’t or couldn’t do - for whatever reason. Maybe you could work towards taking that up as a hobby?
Now that winter is coming up, what about knitting or crochet?
Think you may be needing some spontaneity……. I know I do.. like spontaneously sms’g some local friends to see if they want to go walking together, coffeeing together, sharing a girly flick, having a games day, going to the “local” bowling , just impromptu… is sometimes enough to get out of the rut and reconnect…… and dont forget that laughter is cheap healthy medicine.
cant wait to hear what others say!!
PS YOu shouldnt stop blogging.. we all love your realness!
I’ve been looking for a hobby too & so have started learning to stitch. I don’t have a lot of time, so it doesn’t happen much. But I enjoy just sitting by myself & doing it. But then I adore reading, and would love to have hours to sit around with a good book.
Don’t worry about looking for a hobby - be open to try new things & the right thing will find you.
I’m a scrapbooker and a card maker. For me scrapbooking is about telling the story as well as the photos. For me getting together with a group of ladies and scrapping together is fun and theraputic. I hope you find something that is the same for you.
I like to do embroidery… (bodgey eyesight has put paid to that - I need so much light and I have to have my glasses on, and eh, getting too hard)
I like to stalk dead people - sounds much more excitement than family history; and hey cemetaries are pretty cool.
I taught myself to crochet a couple of winters ago - that was fun
Plus, I read a lot - and the more I read, the more interested I am in writing!
Oh, and cooking and eating as well!
Last August I discovered geocaching & that’s my main hobby these days. Sometimes it’s just fun, sometimes it’s an intellectual exercise (solving the puzzle caches) & sometimes it’s a physical challenge. The main website is http://www.geocaching.com, it has a pretty good explanation of what the game is.
But basically, someone hides a container somewhere & publishes the coordinates of the hide location on the website. The rest of us then try to find the container using a GPS, sign the log when we locate it, rehide it & log our find on the website.
I’ve described a few of my recent caching trips on my blog recently if you want to look at them (http://myunfinishedbusiness.blogspot.com/search/label/geocaching)
I don’t have a crafty bone in my body, but did take up knitting for charity. My mum used to get her friends - and me - to knit long scarves (she gave us the wool thickness and number of rows to do that each scarf was the same). She’d then gather them up and sew them into blankets. I’ve used up all my wool and am in the middle of moving to Switzerland, but loved doing that brainless knitting (ie no fancy stitches) in front of the TV, long car trips etc.
I also have a camera in my handbag with me. Others might have a good mobile phone that takes photos because often you’ll see something quirky that might spark a blog or a funny conversation or an idea.
I often wish I didn’t have so many hobbies - scrapbooking, knitting, crocheting, jigsaws, reading, (I used to write), planning my next vacation, photography, sewing. I spend a lot of time online reading my fav. blogs (and lately watching youtube video - many of which inspire me in on a daily basis. I’m actually at a very happy place right now and i’m not even doing many of my hobbies. I suggest making a list of anything that sounds interesting, then put it in order and start at the top. I’d love to learn jewellery making- but I am NOT taking up any more hobbies. Can’t wait to hear what you decide on.
Are you in my head?? I read this thinking it sounds just like me, then I read all the comments and thought how lucky some of these people are with all these things they do. I never seem to stick at anything, I don’t have friends here to do things with, maybe it’s because the things I love are things that I’m not very good at (I know that no one except the shower head needs to hear me singing lol) I would love to hear what you come up with…..I have knitting stuff here but no one to knit with or to make it interesting, maybe it’s just persistance that is needed (I did make a dish cloth that works fabulous) I do read lots….does that count as something to do??? The library knows me well.
Lets start an online book club!!
So much talent! Thanks everyone for your ideas. Lynette, I think you might be right about the spontaneity bit. Not so easy to be spontaneous out here though.
