Stuff! Stuff! Stuff!
I feel like I’ve reached something of an impasse with my decluttering efforts.
I’ve done the “easy” stuff.
Stuff that is broken, has pieces lost, is outgrown or no longer needed.
Now it’s time to tackle the “hard” stuff.
Stuff that we “might” need or use one day.
But is taking up room we really don’t have and giving the house a more cluttered feel than I would like.
Some days I wish I was one of those minimalist type people who holds on to very little.
It would make maintaining a nice home that little bit easier.
But the fact is, I’m not.
I have to fight against clutter on a regular basis.
Otherwise it ends up overwhelming me.
Obviously one of my problems is that I let too much STUFF come into our home.
I’d love to have a “no spend” year.
Problem is, the word “NO” is like a red rag to a bull and the urge to buy stuff will be more overwhelming than ever.
So, I’m just going to work on having a “slow spend” year. Try to REALLY think about what I’m buying and whether it’s something I’m then going to struggle with getting rid of down the track.
And in the meantime, work on getting 1 or 2 things at a time out of the house in the hope that more goes out than comes in.
My goal will be to get rid of something (or something/s) every single day this year.
I guess I can only try, eh?
How do you deal with the issue of “STUFF?”

I’m in the process of selling my house at the moment and have moved a lot of “stuff” to my son’s house to show the house as uncluttered as possible. It’s made me realise how little I need a lot of that “stuff”. I can be quite brutal at getting rid of things so am thinking maybe all the stuff at his house is unnecessary and can therefore be sold / given away / thrown away.
I’m the same. But I think I’m getting better, or perhaps more practical. I dunno. I am getting a lot better at getting rid of things and not keeping things ‘just in case’ or replacing a group of things with a one multiuse item instead.
I don’t think I could do the ‘no spend’ thing either, but am definitely doing a ‘mindful’ spend these days and that seems to make a difference.
Try packing some of the “stuff” into cardboard boxes, write the date on it, then stash it somewhere. Make a note in your diary about 6 months ahead. If you haven’t missed or needed anything out of that box, maybe you don’t even remember what is in it, then just donate the entire sealed box to the nearest Goodwill store.
I donated three boxes of stuff that hadn’t even been opened since the day I moved in here. Still can’t recall what might have been in them.
Oh I am just the same! The thing is I worry that I might need that thing I’m throwing out… And then i’d have to buy it again and that would be such a waste… Yes, there is no hope for me
Stuff is just that.. stuff.. object that go into the stuff category… things and thoughts that get in our way… in the physical and mental…. that trips us up.. thats how i feel anyway… sometimes i just want to start afresh and get rid of all the stuff. (not sure how flood victims feel though) . For me the things i keep just in case are the things that send me NUTS…… most of it is an inherited need to keep and recycle ….. sometimes that is so helpful and other times a real hindrance to change my ways…..
I have a problem with cheap shops. I see things out so cheap i can’t walk past them, yet most of the time they are the things that are the stuff in my house.. each one costs a little but altogether the amount adds up and ends up in landfill..
Think i need a year like you , to think twice, before i buy big…. to go home, look to see if i have wrappping paper or a card that will suffice rather than buy more that may just add to the huge pile or get mangled with the rest all because i have toooooooo much..
Provoking blog lightening!!!
