Reigning In The Spending
Please tell me I’m not the only one who is finding money slipping through her fingers like water.
Me, the one who usually has a decent handle on money and knows where it has gone and manages to hold onto a portion of it.
Me, the “frugal” one whose friends shake their heads wondering “how she does it”.
Not so much this year.
We’ve been having a bit of a disaster money wise this year.
Nothing major.
Just lots of little “cash leaks”.
And a distinct lack of interest in doing anything to plug them.
I do think that at times it’s good to let loose a little (as long as it’s within your means).
But this year has just been good proof that ignoring your finances will lead to money disappearing at a rapid rate.
Mind you, everyone is talking about how expensive things like food have gotten.
And we didn’t buy any winter clothing last year so we did need a bit of a catch up.
But if I don’t do something about our spending soon, I may have to dip into our emergency fund to cover the shortfall.
I hope it doesn’t get to that stage.
How do I intend to turn things around?
I have no idea!
But I’ll keep you posted.
P.S. I’ve been in Adelaide this past week with Lleyton for Sapsasa Tennis so I actually have a real excuse for not posting (for a change). Hope to post some pics soon.

I hear ya! And the worst thing is, while I’m in the spending mode, I just keep spending. And then start to feel deprived if I rein in. Which leads to more blowouts.. *sigh*
And its the spending time of year!
good luck!!
We’ve been having a similar kind of year. It just creeps up on you doesn’t it.
My spending has gotten out of control too. I’m trying to get back on track by using cash only but it’s hard when so much is bought online and those purchases aren’t budgetted for :-(. I find it’s all the little bits that add up. If you find something that works for you please let me know. Our savings has taken quite a beating of late

Oh I hear ya - that’s why today I’m starting a full time job - three years of barely contributing to the family coffers as a freelancer is enough. We were starting to slide backwards and even though my husband was proud of the work I did and that I took on about 95% of the household stuff, we needed to see our mortgage move down instead of freeze and feel like we could also at least consider upgrading our 15 year old car if we wanted to.
oh yeh…. this time of year its also hard to reign in the spending… especially when i have just been into officeworks and i start drooling.. over all the things i want but dont need.. and then the fun is ruined..
We have been all over the place with money and i find this happens when i am working two jobs and go into denial rather quickly.. thinking that its all okay because we have a little extra each week.. same can happen about my health and when i dont have me time until it all crashes in a heap and i am at the bottom!!!
Oh well. we can always start over… it just takes some thinking and planning and new goal setting and some motivation..
Dont beat yourself up over it.
I can feel a simple Christmas coming on.. just being thankful for the things and people we have around us and not on the things we want or trying to keep up with the Joneses!!!JOnes’????
I am really struggling too - and the books packs bills for school next year have just come in as well, seems to increase significantly every single year. I know what I am doing wrong, but really struggling with the food bill as grocery costs have sky rocketed.
I don’t have money slipping through my fingers like water.
Let me shorten that statement.
I don’t have money.
Since I’ve been working very limited hours, even my emergency stash has disappeared, and I mean completely.
I was kind of hoping this shoulder thing would get worked out quickly and I’d get back to working the hours I used to.
Hasn’t happened.
Pretty soon it’s going to be panic stations around here.
I know exactly what you mean. I have been feeling the same way. We have had a year like that too, what with buying a new (for us) house, rising utilities, and lots of little expenses that add up. I’d love to hear what ideas you come up with for stemmings the flow.
Kate
I’ve just started seriously tracking our money again to see where it is going cos the leakage in our house since the move is mind boggling
YES! That’s me! When you come up with a plan please fill me in!!
Lightening up a little here, I have a little light at the end of my dark tunnel. Things could turn around at least halfway for me soon.
