WARNING….WARNING…BRAIN EXPLOSION IMMINENT!!!!
My lack of posting has not really been due to lack of time (although that is always a factor).
It has more to do with limited brain power.
Right now, my head feels like it’s going to explode.
That’s what happens when you take on a role like President and the Parents and Friends when you have NO IDEA what the job entails.
I’m on a high learning curve here.
And a lot of it is just little stuff.
Like…
Where’s the cupboard?
Where’s the key to the cupboard?
What do I do when I need to photocopy stuff?
How do letters home to parents work? Does the Principal need to see them/sign them?
Finding out the best ways of communication with the school and within the school.
Not to mention figuring out how to communicate with parents. And how to communicate how IMPORTANT parental involvement in the school is. And how to commuicate that Parents & Friends are NOT just about baking cakes!!!
Yes, any minute now I think my head might explode.
I sure hope it gets easier than this!!!!
If not, my blogging is either going to be non existent or a bunch of whines about how busy I am and why don’t parents care and why doesn’t the goverment care…etc etc.
Let’s hope that doesn’t happen. Otherwise I might have a grand total of 3 readers by the end of the year!
MAN - why couldn’t Zemanta give me an image of a brain exploding. That would have been kind of cool!

Jodi, lean HEAVILY on the past president for information and help. S/he should be walking you through this…
Go and ask the previous president for a handover & make friends with the office ladies - very good friends.
And some of your questions above are ones that are always asked and there is no answer - communicating about the p&f to parents & trying to get most of them involved is really really hard - we have tried wine & cheese nights, moving our meetings to straight after school when parents are actually there, constant newsletters, physically going up to lots of parents & asking them to come, guest speakers on various topics…..good luck with that & if you find a solution I would love to hear it.
Remember to delegate too - you should have a secretary, treasurer, fundraiser and other people - a lot of the time they won’t offer to do something, but are generally happy to do it to ask.
Good luck
They^ said what I would have said….
“parents & friends are not all about baking cakes”; huh, good luck with that. When I joined the group, way back when, every single meeting was about fundraising and cake stalls. When I missed a meeting because I was fed up, they voted me in as the new secretary because I had nice handwriting so the minutes would always be easy to read. Phooey!!
I don’t envy you but I applaude you for trying .I hope it all works out in the end , I was only on a committee and it’s hard enthusing other parents who sit back & let others do the work while all the school reaps the rewards.
I don’t look forward to starting all over again in two yrs time lol.
Just had an idea that perhaps you can start a Presidents manual.. the how to’s of where to start … who to ask… and so its already for when you hand over next year!! LOL!!!
Remember to take baby steps.. and yes delegate.. many leaders dont do this well and become overwhelmed whereas if they had let others on board. the load would have been lighter and more team effort.. !!! Training up leaders isnt always easy but worth it in the end..
Please dont let your brain explode.. put your thoughts on papers.. sleep on them.. and the details will all come to fruition..

Hang in there. You’ll figure it out without your brain exploding!
All letters home from a school have to be passed by the principal. Every one.
Photo copying in our school… we just go to the secretary and say we want to photo copy for p and f and add it to their account. Some schools have a p and f code to feed into the copyier.
Most p and f meetings are poorly attended. You can always invite some personally to the meetings as if you were their mummy. One of our major fundraisers required help from all 80 families and so i delegated 3 people to ring each family from the school and personally ask for help on a roster. It worked for about 8 years of the fundraiser… when they stopped helping we introduced a fundraising levy and now they pay 150 per year per family. Executive members always put heaps more effort in than others. that is why when you take it on you have a 2 or 3 year plan, some goals and when you acheive them…. leave. ASK ASK ASK…. everyone feels the same in a new position. Good luck and good on you for trying.
Hope you’re hanging in there!! Missing your posts!
Thanks for all your feedback and suggestions. They really help. I do feel like I’m making headway. Past President was originally going to continue but had some personal issues come up at last minute so it’s not easy getting info from her.
I do need to slow down or I’m going to burn out.
Lynette - you crack me up!
Perhaps I should make you my personal “image finder”.
