Keeping Up Appearances
I’m the kind of person who cares what other people think.
Way too much at times, I’m afraid.
I think some of this tendency has lessened a little as I’ve been coming to terms with a sense of self that isn’t self loathing. I doubt I’ll ever fully get rid of my desire to please and my concern for what others think but I am glad it’s abating a little.
What I didn’t expect out of this trip was for how unconcerned I might become about what others thought of my appearance.
At home, if I was going into town (unless it was to the gym or some physical activity was involved), I’d always put on make up.
And heaven forbid that any member of the family might leave the house with the slightest crease in their clothing.
So, it has surprised me no end that in the last 14 weeks, I have ironed the sum total of 2 items. Not 2 items a week. 2 items in TOTAL!!!!!!
And I haven’t worn make up many more times than that (okay, I’ll admit, I have worn it every Sunday for church and a couple of times when we’ve gone out for a meal but that’s IT).
I even went into Sydney (city that is) without even thinking about whether I should wear make up or not.
Totally out of the habit.
I walk around the caravan park in my pyjama’s, rarely bothering to “cover up” with a dressing gown (don’t worry, my pj’s are quite decent).
I’ve even been wearing thongs with my trackpants occasionally.
This morning I even wore socks with thongs!!!! (Yeah, I know, that’s pushing it a bit – in my defence, it was still dark out!).
So, it will be interesting to see how I go when I get home.
Will I go back to my old ways or will I care less about “appearances”?
Side Note: Today has been the horribly boring crossing of the Hay Plains. Tomorrow we drive to Adelaide to get home on Friday. If for some reason I don’t get a chance to post in the next few days, we’re nearly home and regular posting (as well as a catch up on photo’s) will be forthcoming.

That stretch around Hay is horrid isn’t it?
I hope some of your broken habits stay broken. It’s quite freeing to not be worrying all the time about what other’s might think
I really can’t believe that your trip is comming to an end. It seems like just yesterday you were packing the camper to head out. I have really enjoyed reading about your adventures I have traveled Austrailia thru your eyes. I can’t wait to hear more about it.
PS I don’t wear make up much and if it has to be ironed I don’t buy it. I think I just have a lazy streak.
No ironing (2 items doesn’t count) and minimal makeup? Wandering around in your pj’s? You SO TOTALLY slipped into holiday mode. And I’m so gosh-darned happy to hear it. I hope you can keep this up once you get home. So you were in Adelaide today……you weren’t in my supermarket this morning were you? I served a customer who wasn’t one of my regulars, but she looked a little familiar…….you should have said “Hi, it’s me!” (if it was you).
I tend to not worry so much about what others think, not like I did when I was younger, and it IS freeing to feel this way…
WE must have been thinking the same thing..!!
we just got back from camping 3 nights away in a local forest area and do you know what? I , yes me! went without a shower for 3 mornings… and had to just brush my hair without a mirror, no makeup, no matching clothes as i took old ones.. and even wore my same jeans 3 days!! ikk.. and you know what , we all commented how none of us smelt of anything but smoke… however i did brush my teeth and use deod!! LOL!! Even forgot face cream 2 mornings!
But Praise God for showers at home as my hair was so oily and dirty from the camp smoke! and our home toilet is luxurious unlike the long drop that was a hike away!!
Maybe we can be a little less tough on ourselves from now on and know that we are still loved even if we dont all match or look together!! XX The pressure we put on ourselves is harsher than that of others!
Hope its nice to be back in SA country real soon.
I love that you didn’t iron or wear makeup. I know how that feels. I rarely put makeup on since moving north. It’s also about feeling good with you. Sounds like you are loving you more:)
