You have no TV????

I have to laugh (to myself of course) at the number of people who have asked us where our tv is in the caravan.

It’s not uncommon for people to have a look through your van and the first question seems to commonly be “where’s the tv?”

Ummm….we don’t have one.  How’s that for a novel idea?

If it’s not “where’s the tv?”, it’s “how is your tv reception?” or “have you had any trouble setting up your tv aerial?”  They’ve obviously not taken the time to notice we don’t HAVE ONE.

For crying in a bucket peoples, is it not possible to go away for a few weeks (or a few months) WITHOUT A TV?????

And to top it all off, the other day a couple of older blokes told our kids off for PLAYING SOCCER because they couldn’t hear their TV?????  Who does that?????  Shouldn’t we be applauding kids for getting out and getting active???

*SIGH*

The funny thing is, we set out with the thought that if we really missed having a tv, we could get one along the way.

I was keen to go with no tv, Farmboy wasn’t 100% convinced.

He is now.

We haven’t even missed it!

When we first left home, we watched masterchef occasionally on the caravan park tv.  And I think the boys watched about half a game of AFL the other day in the laundry (was closer than the rec room tv).  And I think we might even try to find somewhere to watch the AFL grand final.

But, other than that we really haven’t missed it.

To the extent that one morning we thought we’d send the kids off to the camp kitchen (which was really close) to watch some Saturday morning kids shows.  They latest less than 10 minutes before they came back bored and wanting to play with their toys rather than watch tv.

YAH!!!!  You have to be happy with that outcome!!!!  :)

We never had a telly in ours = that’s how I learned to be a card shark!

Wow - how’s that for an unexpected outcome!

    Hi Jodi,

When we on our trip staying in van parks I realized after a few days we had watched no TV so I decided to set a challenge to see if we could go the whole trip without TV (only possible because DH wasn’t with us). We managed with the kids just watching one or two movies in Perth (when it was too cold to be out playing at night). I think it’s great you didn’t get a TV and even better than no-one has missed it.

They couldn’t hear their TV huh? Did you remind them that tv’s have a volume control button? It’s great that you’ve managed without one, you may find once you get home the kids (and you) might continue to watch much less.

We have a TV, but it is not attached to an aerial so we have no TV reception. It is used solely for DVD’s. This is in our House. I love it. I love the control over what the kids are watching.

Not sure how we will fare next year when W goes to school.

Glad you are having a great time.

I think it’s BRILLIANT you can all keep yourselves occupied without a telly! What do you do for your own entertainment? Reading?

We went to a birthday party on the weekend, and the kids (maybe 7 and 9) and they were glued to their DS’!!! They didn’t participate at all. Really sad.

brilliant plan! sometimes I wish we didn’t have a tv to get addicted too. the fall season starts Monday and I only plan to watch a few shows, not like normal where we watch or record to watch later something each night of the week. I think we will only be watching on Monday, Thursday and Fridays. I sadly am addicted to Grey’s Anatomy and have to know what is going on.

Great to know others have no TV! I sold mine way back when my kids were 4/5 ( they’re 28/29 now). I still don’t own a TV, and like you, the AFL is probably the only thing I really miss.

I think I’d suffer from ‘no-tv-itis’ for that length of time but good onya for going without. Aand shame on those other men for telling your kids off for playing! The nerve!

We’re just back from a couple of weeks away in the van - with no TV. We get the puzzled looks from fellow campers too, but seriously never miss it. At the park we stayed in recently the lady in reception handed me a TV cable without even asking if we needed it. When I said we didn’t have telly, you’d have thought I told her I have three legs :-)
