Almost there! Monday we head up for a drive to Cape Tribulation which is the highest point we'll reach this trip. Tuesday we start the descent down again. So I guess that's the closest to "there" that we'll get!!!!

Hyams Beach at Jervis Bay on the south coast of NSW is in the record books for its white sands - that's worth a visit!

Rainbow beach in qld is pretty cool too

Sounds like you are having a blast regardless :)

Katy - yeah, we were figuring that would be the case (the better beaches further south).

River - I suspect so. Apparently Townsville trucked in a heap of white sand to mix with the mud to at least give an appearance of a beach. As for the humidity - even at this time of year, the air feels humid compared to SA's air. But I could handle spending at least some of the year here. Not so sure about the wet.

Ian - we head to Wonga Beach from here so it'll be interesting to see what we find.

Sharon - So far, no frogs in the shower here!!! Yah!!!! Apparently the midges are bad if you get bitten. Pray that we don't!!!! Using HEAPS of aeroguard but apparently it doesn't always help. Hoping the crocs are too sleepy this time of year given we're staying on the beach.

Kelli - I think you're right there (about weather vs beaches). We'd like to do South of Sydney sometime.

There are beautiful beaches on the south coast of NSW that you can actually swim at. I guess you head to QLD for the warm weather & the reef rather than spectactular beaches.

Ian is right. There are some lovely beaches further north. But there are lots of bighties, our beaches are much safer...

Having said that, Cairns is one of my favourite places in the world (outside of cyclone season). The odd frog in the shower never killed anyone!

From what I remember of my fleeting visit to Cairns many years ago, you have to go about 20 mins or so north to get to the decent beaches.

I'm guessing they need the beautiful esplanade because the "beach" is so pitiful. I'm glad to hear the town is lovely though. I always planned on retiring to Cairns when I turned 50. Obviously that hasn't happened and probably won't; since I've got older I'm much less able to tolerate the heat and humidity.
