Ugly Beach
Trailer Boy (our 5 year old) has nicknamed this place (Cairns) “Ugly Beach”. We drove passed the beach yesterday and the whole way back to the caravan he sang a little ditty that he made up. It went something like this:
“We are at ugly beach, ugly beach, ugly beach
We are staying at ugly beach, ugly beach….” and over and over it went.
It was hilarious!!!!
I tried to take a photograph to show you what it’s like but I’m not sure it does it justice:
It’s like this big mudflat. They do have a narrow strip of sand which I suspect has been trucked in! And the shallow goes forever when the tide it out! They do have a lovely Esplanade though with lawned areas, paths and heaps of playground equipment as well as a water play area.

Cairns Esplanade Waterplay
I think we must be spoilt for nice beaches back home because so far, Queensland has not really shown us a beach that we’d consider “nice”. We’ve seen some nice water spots but not so nice beaches. I just assumed they were all white sand beaches up here. I was wrong.
I can forgive it it’s “ugly beach” though as the town is absolutely lovely and nestled into the hills. It’s all very picturesque.
Tonight the park is having a pizza night in the camp kitchen right near where our caravan is so we’re looking forward to a social night out for that. Tomorrow (Monday) we’re heading up to Kuranda on the skyrail (coming back on the train). It should be a lovely day although I hope it’s not raining like it has been today. At least it’s not cold though.

There are some beautiful beaches on the sunshine and gold coasts! But I’ve heard the beaches further north aren’t much chop.
I’m guessing they need the beautiful esplanade because the “beach” is so pitiful. I’m glad to hear the town is lovely though. I always planned on retiring to Cairns when I turned 50. Obviously that hasn’t happened and probably won’t; since I’ve got older I’m much less able to tolerate the heat and humidity.
From what I remember of my fleeting visit to Cairns many years ago, you have to go about 20 mins or so north to get to the decent beaches.
Ian is right. There are some lovely beaches further north. But there are lots of bighties, our beaches are much safer…
Having said that, Cairns is one of my favourite places in the world (outside of cyclone season). The odd frog in the shower never killed anyone!
There are beautiful beaches on the south coast of NSW that you can actually swim at. I guess you head to QLD for the warm weather & the reef rather than spectactular beaches.
You will have to come and play at Rainbow Bay Beacg and Coolangatta, they are beautiful.
Enjoy the Train, something I have wanted to do
Blessings
Suzie
Katy - yeah, we were figuring that would be the case (the better beaches further south).
River - I suspect so. Apparently Townsville trucked in a heap of white sand to mix with the mud to at least give an appearance of a beach. As for the humidity - even at this time of year, the air feels humid compared to SA’s air. But I could handle spending at least some of the year here. Not so sure about the wet.
Ian - we head to Wonga Beach from here so it’ll be interesting to see what we find.
Sharon - So far, no frogs in the shower here!!! Yah!!!! Apparently the midges are bad if you get bitten. Pray that we don’t!!!! Using HEAPS of aeroguard but apparently it doesn’t always help. Hoping the crocs are too sleepy this time of year given we’re staying on the beach.
Kelli - I think you’re right there (about weather vs beaches). We’d like to do South of Sydney sometime.
Hyams Beach at Jervis Bay on the south coast of NSW is in the record books for its white sands - that’s worth a visit!
Rainbow beach in qld is pretty cool too
Sounds like you are having a blast regardless
Soooo…..where are we now? “there” by any chance?
Almost there! Monday we head up for a drive to Cape Tribulation which is the highest point we’ll reach this trip. Tuesday we start the descent down again. So I guess that’s the closest to “there” that we’ll get!!!!
