35 Today

Oops, I’m not supposed to tell you my age am I?  LOL.

So, today is day 2 of our trip and also my birthday.  When I told the kids I was getting a “big trip” for my birthday, Trailer Boy got all sooky and said he wanted a big trip for his birthday.  LOL and oops all at the same time.  I told him I’m sharing my big trip with everyone! :)

So, day one of our trip turned out to be a bit of a struggle.  Everyone was tired and testy which made it harder.

In the first 200km, we stopped 4 times.  3 of those were at lunch time.  We stopped for lunch in a parking bay (oh, how I love the convenience of the caravan and being able to stop anywhere).  Everyone piled in the car (which involves moving a seat so that one can get into the very back of the car) and then suddenly, Lleyton decides he needs to go to the toilet.  He’s the one in the back back at the moment so we had to pack up the seat and let him out.  Fortunately, Trailer Boy went then too.

We drove about 5 minutes down the road only to discover one of the kids had left their car gear in the caravan.  So we had to stop again.

It was at that point that I wondered if we were EVER going to make it to our destination.  It was also at that point that Farmboy introduced a new “rule”.  Anyone who needed to stop within half an hour of a stop would be fined 50c.

Funnily enough, when we headed off this morning and stopped for fuel, I ended up making 3 trips into the caravan for stuff the kids wanted.  They were lucky we’d already had to make a stop or it might have been “bad luck”.  Perhaps that is the key.  Plan to stop for fuel just after we’ve headed off so we can get what’s been forgotten from out of the van.  I think both boys (Lleyton and Trailer Boy) are brewing something.  They both woke up this morning with sore throats and Lleyton was coughing during the night.  Trailer Boy seems particularly tired.  He slept in this morning even with all the moving around that was happening.  Amazing for him!

So, back to my birthday.

Farmboy gave me a “caravan survival kit”.  I took photo’s but I’m typing this as we drive along and I’m not sure if we’ll have time to upload them so I’ll just tell you about them.

COLLAPSIBLE BUCKET

We don’t have a bucket so this will come in handy and doesn’t take up much room.  Most likely he’ll use it more than me (washing the car, fishing) but that’s okay.

KIT KAT

For when I need a break!

LIFESAVERS

For when I need saving (that would have been last night when I was tempted to head home again!!!)

PANADOL

Pretty self explanatory really.

EAR PLUGS

Could REALLY come in handy in the car!!!!

CARAMEL BUDS

To sweeten me up???? (yeah, I have been a little grumpy so far :( )

$20 NOTE

My “run away from home/caravan” fund.  LOL.

Lleyton also gave me $5 of his own money.  He’s done that before and is rather generous like that.  I never want to take it but at the same time, don’t want to discourage his generosity.  I think I’ll buy something with it that we can all share.

Farmboy cooked bacon and eggs on the bbq this morning for breakfast which was lovely.

We’re hoping to make it to Broken Hill today and will go out for dinner tonight as a family which will be lovely.  Hopefully we make better time today so we can have a bit of a look around Broken Hill this afternoon.  I guess we’ll see how we go.  So far so good.  We left about an hour earlier than yesterday and have made it further without needing to stop.  The kids seem more settled in the car which is about what we expected.  They seem to travel better once they’ve gotten used to sitting in the car.

Update: Made it to Broken Hill and have had a lovely afternoon.  Went out for a lovely meal for dinner and now we’re spending a few minutes at the golden arches so I can post this. :)

Excellent! Glad you got your meal that I ordered! How about the foot massage?

Training just wasn’t the same without you last night. Of course I wouldn’t know that if you had taken me with you!

    Happy Birthday!

I often find the kids settle down - the excitement yesterday was probably a bit too much for them all. Meanwhile my 5 year old just slept for 15.5 hours straight, and she’s not sick, so who knows what’s going on with them.

I’d like to see some pictures of Broken Hill, if you get time ;)

First of all a very happy birthday to you !
I can imagine how “funny” it is to drive such long distances with kids, lol ! I got already bored when we came back now from Italy and had to do 1200 km, (746 miles) and we did it in two times. But I remember the days when our son was a kid and we did it in one shot ! I got crazy, so I can imagine how it is for you, lol !

    BTW : I do a smiley Saturday !!

You are going to Broken Hill? I was there in 2004 (from the USA). My two sons and I headed to White Cliffs and stayed two nights at the Underground Hotel. It was wonderful. I made a friend at White Cliffs, Donna-Lee. She and her husband own Top Level Opals. If you get a chance to visit White Cliff, stop by their shop and say hi from me. I think you will really enjoy meeting her and her family. I do hope you read this before you leave Broken Hill. Do post the outcome on the Aussie Forum. Have a terrific trip.

Oh, happy birthday to you! I’ve been away from all blogs for a few days but back again now. You are on your trip - how fantastic. I hope things start to be more fun for you soon. :)

Ooo you’ve sent me off on memory lane as we used to caravan when we were children. So many happy memories, infinitely superior to the RV’s in the States. Just trail it around and park up here and there as needed. Hope you enjoy a thoroughly delightful dose of holiday therapy.
    Cheers

Thanks for all your birthday messages. :)

Kin - maybe she is growing! Lleyton has some pictures which I’m trying to post to our travel blog. Having some issues with Windows Live Writer publishing to that blog. Grrrr….
