May Grocery Spending
Well, May didn’t go quite as planned.
How unusual!!!! LOL.
Or maybe the plan was a little ambitious?
Or maybe I’m just really BAD at NOT buying food?
The goal?
Spend $50 or less a week over the 4 shopping weeks in May for a total of $200 for the month (bearing in mind we’re using up as much of our on hand food as we can).
The reality?
*clears throat nervously*
Total spend of $351.65 or an average of $87.90.
In my mind that is a pretty ordinary effort.
Don’t ask me what happened.
Everyone wanted to EAT (how rude!!!!).
Every week I kept thinking that next week the list would be shorter.
But it wasn’t.
Oh well.
Balance left in kitty to go toward my BHAG = $248.35
A little short on my goal of $400 but better than nothing.
The plan for June?
There is no plan.
Who knows what is going to happen?
I’ll continue to try and use up as much of what we have.
At some point during the month we’ll run out of meat and that’s going to increase the weekly spending quite considerably.
So, I’ll take it week by week and we’ll see what happens.

You forgot that the colder weather brings on the hungries.
Good point River. I did forget that. And since they were eating so much, I really wanted to make sure they were eating healthy options so we went through a LOT of fruit.
I think you did quite well. i can buy $80 worth in the blink of an eye and it will only fit in 3 green bags!!!
Sometimes when i try to cull my pantry i really do get to a point where i believe that I am sick of such food and rather than being creative I just go shopping for the heck of it…. not a good way to save at all!!!
It will be a challenge for you to get through June….. but hey you will soon be in holiday mode that you wont want to eat for the excitement!!! LOL
HAve a great day at sport tomorrow… it will keep you warm after todays cold snap!
I know, it doesn’t really go far these days does it? Here’s hoping it’s not *too* cold tomorrow. My poor knees don’t like it very much! As for not eating from excitement? That could be very good for me. LOL.
I was so proud of myself this week! I had an unexpected (well, forgotten actually) expense this week which left me $140 for groceries and Saturday at the footy (I usually spend at least $150 on groceries alone). So I menu planned yesterday before I shopped, taking into account what I already had and spent $69 on groceries! Yay! And today we will pack our lunch to take to footy (we usually do on away games) and my thermos so hopefully I won’t need to dip into savings at all.
Hmmm. This menu planning thing really does work! LOL!
Go you!!!! Amazing what can be done when we have to.
I think you are amazing to spend only that much.
My grocery bill is way,way higher and I only have two small mouths in my 2 of 3 children.
Though the big’un eats his more than his fair share - we can count on him away at least one -two nights a week and he doesn’t take lunch anymore.(I stopped making it except on rare ocassions since I kept finding it mouldy in his bag)
Yay for the kitty pot growing.
You should be awfully proud!!! I think it’s a top effort, especially with 3 growing children!!
I think its still a good effort. I dont seem to have any extra money to show for it, but I find avoiding shopping for food at all seems to be a good way to not spend on it.
Since little Miss arrived 4 months ago I have only been into the shops 4 or 5 times. As apposed to my usual weekly.
It does mean that Dh is doing some of the shopping, but not really enough to compinsate. We are about to embark on anything with numbers (as in additives, preservitives etc) must be eaten. Then we are going bad number free. Will be interesting to see if that does anything to our bill.
