Apple Pie

I’m the kind of cook that hates following a recipe. Unfortunately, this can lead to many disasters in the kitchen. However, sometimes new and experimental ideas do work out and a new recipe is born (if I can only remember what I actually did!!!! LOL).

At the moment, this style of cooking is coming in handy as I attempt to use up all kinds of bits and pieces before we head off on the “big trip”.

Last week, in an attempt to use up some custard powder and some sprinkles, I made custard biscuits rolled in sprinkles. They went down very well.

Last night, I had a sheet of puff pastry and a bottle of pureed apple to use up. I grabbed 4 apples from the fridge (several of which needed using up including one with the tiniest bite taken out of it) and cut them up into a pie dish. Then sprinkled them with a little sugar. Poured the bottle of pureed apple over the top and finished it off with the sheet of puff pastry brushed with egg and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar.

It was GOOD!!!!

I was worried the pureed apple might have made it a bit too soggy but the fresh apple and puree blended together well to make a delicious filling of similar consistency to stewed apple.

The kids all really liked it and it was pretty quick and simple to make (other than the 40 minutes cooking time). I think it might be a keeper.

Sadly, I didn’t take a photograph to show you. :( Maybe next time?

Let’s hope some of my future “Use it up” experiments work out as well as this one did. They may well become more and more strange as supplies get low.

Might just try this as it sounds quick & easy. I have an apple pie in the oven at the moment but I bought it at woolies. Good luck with the experiments.

Do you really have to use up canned food or can you leave some at home? or perhaps you are using it up to save some more money for your trip?

Sometimes those made up recipes are the best ones… and they also expose our loved ones to new tastes..

    Enjoy!

I’m bad with following recipes too! They always look overwhelming to me…and I hate step by step directions.

I’d rather just experiment–but often I end up with disasters!

I’m wondering why you have to use up custard powder and sprinkles. those things keep practically forever. Things like apple puree can be frozen for longer keeping. You need to make sure you still have some supplies left for when you return home or you’ll be shopping on the same day you arrive home.

I always follow the recipe the first time I make something new, if it turns out to my liking, I stick with it, but more often I’ll make adjustments. some of these adjustments create disasters. Then I’m cross with myself for wasting ingredients.

Kelli - I bought an apple pie from Woollies a while back. It was really cheap and REALLY YUMMMY!!!!

Lynette - yeah, I don’t have to use it all. In part it’s about using what I’ve already bought rather than having that money sitting in the pantry while we’re away. In part it’s about using things up while I’m in the frame of mind and mood to do so. The pureed apple was actually in a jar that had gotten dropped and the lid seal broke so that’s why it particularly needed using.

Dina - Disasters are half the fun I’m sure. LOL.

River - I don’t have to but both of them are things we really haven’t been using so it makes sense to use them. The sprinkles are leftover from a birthday years ago (not the kind we usually eat). I’m not sure why I haven’t been using the custard powder. It’s been a while since I made custard and last time I made it, I made it from scratch anyway so didn’t use custard powder. As for freezing stuff, we’re not leaving a freezer on while we’re away. Our power supply is too unreliable and I’d hate to come home to a freezer that’s been mistakenly off for weeks or months. Those using the house are unlikely to need/use a freezer. As for supplies when we get back, I’ll do a big shop on the way home to stock up I think.
