How Long Does It Take You To Get Ready?
A while back, Farmboy and I were staying with some people and he noticed that the female member of this family took quite a long time to get ready to go anywhere, much to the frustration of her husband.
He indicated to me at the time how thankful he was that I’m not like that. At the time I wasn’t sure if if was a positive or a negative. Maybe I don’t take enough time with my appearance?
Anyway, out of curiosity, we timed how long it does take me and discovered that I can get through a shower (including washing my hair), get dressed, do my hair and make up and be out in the door in around 15 minutes.
Generally speaking, I allow myself 30 minutes to an hour to get ready to go anywhere. Usually that includes eating breakfast (and my wake up cup of tea) though.
I have to admit that yesterday I was very thankful for this skill. I was running late getting back from driving the tractor and had to be in town by midday for my piano lesson. I ended up with 20 minutes in which to get myself ready, organise any of Lleyton’s needs (who was home sick), grab what I needed for the trip into town and have a quick run-through of the piece of been learning on the piano and leave.
I made it. Just.
It has made me wonder though. Are we 2 extremes here? I can’t remember how long it was taking this person to get ready but it did seem like an awfully long time.
How long does it take you to get ready to go out somewhere? Do you have a fast mode and a slower mode?

If I don’t have to wash my hair, I can be showered, madeup and dressed and out the door in 20-30mins.
If I have to wash my hair (which thankfully is only twice a week) I need to start THE NIGHT BEFORE!
(I have waist length THICK curly hair and I don’t blow dry and never leave the house with wet hair)
If I’m going anywhere I usually know in advance and prepare the day before, making sure I have the things I need to take ready in my bag. Then I just follow my usual shower, dress, breakfast routine, totals about 20 minutes, and I’m good to go. Since I’m usually showered and breakfasted early in the day, with keys and purse always in my bag, even sudden outings aren’t a problem. I check my hair and teeth, then I’m out the door. I never bother with make up. If I was going to some social engagement that required dressing up etc, I’d probably take longer to get ready, but I’d still have clothes and accessories planned and ready to wear by the day before. I just don’t see the point in puttering around dithering over lipstick shades and whether or not a particular pair of shoes is the right look, while others are waiting and getting impatient.
The funniest thing is the other day we had 45 minutes to get all 5 of us ready and out the door (fortunately not showered. Turns out I managed it in 25 minutes and we were early LOL.
Including a shower, hair and makeup I guess 30 minutes. I rarely wear makeup so on average 20-25 minutes. But since it’s never me leaving the house on my own where I would be required to do those things, I haven’t done it for about 5 years. I always have to get someone else ready too - even if it’s only to be babysat.
I think I can get myself out of the house in 20 minutes if I don’t have breakfast. With breakfast, no more than 1/2 hour as long as I don;t get distracted by either the computer or the newspaper.
My aunt on the other hand - 2 hours. I can remember sitting in the car waiting for her to put on her foot cream for 20 minutes. Can you tell she has never had kids???
I have no kids, but when both hubby & I were working, I allowed myself 30-45 min personal get ready time then it took at least 30 min to get hubby up to dress and get lunches made and eat breakfast. Now that hubby is not working (due to sick family obligations) it only takes me about 30 min to get ready then about 20 to get lunch and eat breakfast, feed the cat. I get up about 6am and leave the house 7am, and I don’t go non stop the whole time I have paced myself to not be stressed out. Sometimes I am actually able to get a load of laundry started so I can put in dryer when get home from work, or dishwasher loaded with breakfast dishes and turn on if it wasn’t run the night before. When I need to hurry due to over sleeping I can get everything done in 30 min but it is too stressful.
I don’t know if I could handle having kids to get ready. I think I would freak out every day. I personally think you are Super Mom and deserve an award
If it’s just me, no kids, no breakfast. I can shower, makeup and dress and get out the door in about 15 minutes. + 10 for breakfast. + 20 minutes to get 3 kids dressed and breakfasted.
But I try not to rush it if I can avoid it! Then I forget things!
I rarely wear makeup and I just pull my hair back so I can get ready quickly if I need to. Sometimes, though, it is pleasant not to rush.
I work full time, the kids and I need to be out of the house at roughly the same time. We have a regimented routine!
I get up at 7am, shower, wake teenage daughter, she showers. While she is showering I use her room to blowdry my hair and apply makeup (that’s where all the stuff always ended up so I’ve quit fighting it!). Then I pack lunches. When steph gets out of the shower I wake Scott who is next in the shower. Steph and I generally leave about 15 minutes before Scott so I make sure he’s out of the shower before we leave (or he would spend all day in there), throw toast at him, lecture him not to be late for the bus, remind him to put the cats out and shut the doors, turn off the tv etc etc and off we go.
This takes us 45minutes. Not a bad feat considering Steph often blow dries her hair and wears foundation to school.
I don’t eat breakfast though. Just have a coffee when I get to work.
I have done it in 12, but I am not saying it was stunning - to achieve stunning we have to start the Wednesday before.
Kelley - I don’t know how you can stand having such long hair. Mine was once but since kids - no way!!!
River - you sound very organised. I agree, I hate keeping people waiting (and hate being kept waiting myself).
Kin - you did well. I haven’t timed getting everybody ready but we usually allow an hour including breakfast if we have to get somewhere by a certain time.
Kelli - yeah, getting distracted by the computer…. that definitely blows out my time schedule!!!! LOL about your aunt. That’s terrible!
Lynne - nobody knows how to do it with kids until they have them. It’s a bit of a “learn on the job” type gig. I remember when I first had 2, how suddenly 1 was so easy in comparison to 2. When I only had 1 though, it didn’t seem easy at all! Oh, and it gets easier as they get older. Well, most days anyway.
Katy - Not rushing is definitely preferable, I agree.
Emma - for sure.
Sharon - you had me rolling around on the floor laughing (ROFLOL) about giving up and getting ready in Steph’s room. What? Scott doesn’t get to ride to school with the “girls”?
Jeanie - stunning is about letting your inner light shine! I’m sure you can manage that easier than you think!
Scott wouldn’t be seen dead riding to school in the little car with the pink seat covers and pink windscreen wiper blades, and pink steering wheel cover, and pink fluffy dice….I don’t understand why he has a problem with it!
LOL @ Sharon.
I can get me and the kids (3 under 5) out the door in 25 minutes if I dont shower and dont give the baby breakfast. (wake her and new nappy and she stays in PJ’s)
We do that on preschool mornings if I sleep in. Then baby and I come home, she gets breakfasted and I shower.
A normal morning is about 45 minutes. For me to shower, breakfast me and kids, dress kids pack bags. (Still dont feed the baby, but do dress her).
Just me with shower, hair nice dress I’d allow 30 minutes. Can’t remember the last time I went anywhere nice without the kids on my own though.
I did just go away for a retreat weekend for scrapbooking, but had to pack car with everything but kitchen sink so started the day before, LOL!!!
It depends…
Work days - if I am walking, I get up around 6.30am, hope none of the kids get up (because they normally want feeding, lol) and I am out the door between 7.15 and 7.30am. If I am driving and doing the kid drop off - I get up just after 6am, and we struggle to leave by 7.30am! It takes me exactly the same amount of time to get ready - it just depends how many people I have to yell at to get out the door.
I shower, dress, blowdry hair, do makeup eat breakfast, read the paper, have coffee, unpack and restack the dishwasher, check my bag and write a note for whoever’s in charge that day…
If we’re going out, it takes me for ages, as I have to sort everybody else out first!
