Smiley Saturday: Apprentice Tractor Driver

smiley-saturday-2.JPG

This week I had my first tractor driving lesson.

Here I am when I first started:

Apprentice Tractor Driver

That’s a mighty big machine to get used to driving.

Thankfully there isn’t too much you can hit out in the paddock.

After a while, I started to relax a little:

Driving the Tractor in my pink John Deere Hat

Farmboy bought me the pink John Deere hat a couple of weeks ago to get me all “psyched”.  Kind of funny given our machinery is mostly Case.   Problem is, don’t think Case make a pink hat!!!

Sadly, they don’t make pink tractors either.  I have to put up with a faded red as the closest I’ll get to a pink tractor:

Me in the Case Tractor

And this is what the tractor is pulling:

Cultivator Behind Case Tractor

The cultivator turns the soil over.  We don’t do a lot of this anymore.  A lot of the crop is sown by a “no till” method that goes straight into unworked ground.  Once upon a time all paddocks would be “ripped up” like this and often “worked back” (which is the same process a second time) before being sown.  Farming methods are constantly evolving and changing.

Anyway, we have a couple of paddocks which Farmboy is “ripping up” this year and they’re perfect for me to learn on.  It’s hard to get a straight line when you’re learning.  That’s not really a problem when simply turning the soil over but isn’t so great when you’re putting the seed in as the green all comes up in wriggly lines.

Anyway, lesson 1 is now over.  Farmboy stayed with me for a couple of laps then jumped out and left me to it!!!!

I REALLY enjoyed it.  In fact, I didn’t want to give the tractor back to Farmboy.  It’s MY tractor now!!!!  LOL.

There’s a real feeling of accomplishment seeing the earth turn over behind you like that.

I hope you can all find a reason to smile on this Smiley Saturday! :) If you write a Smiley Saturday post, please feel free to add a link to your post below.

Yes I can see that might be a lot of fun after you’ve got over the fear factor. How very thoughtful for them to have found a hat a while in advance. That’s a heck of a lot of machinery. Well done you.
    Cheers

Kelley - glad it made you smile. :)

    Gattina - lol.

Grampy - tempting, but no. I’m too much of a perfectionist.

Maddy - my pink “farmer chick” hat makes me smile. :) Yeah, it is big. Not as big as some around here though.

You have every right to stand loud and proud after managing that.

I really enjoy driving the tractor… but since returning to work don’t do it much anymore. I sometimes go out once I get home from work so Kym and go check the sheep, have some tea etc. It’s so peaceful out there.

    River - thank you :)

Sharon - I thought the tractor was a bit loud to be “peaceful”. Farmboy tells me that’s a quiet tractor!!!! Sheesh! :D
