Caravan & Camping Show
Farmboy and I are off to the Caravan and Camping Show today. We have a few things on our agenda including:
* Talking to some tourism people about the best and worst places for crossing the Great Dividing Range with a caravan.
* Collecting some tourism information for the places we’d like to go (and hopefully talking to someone who can help us work out the best place to see the Great Barrier Reef).
* Catching up with the salesman who sold us our caravan and getting some more of his business cards (we’re getting good at handing them out).
* Watching a Dreampot demonstration (I bought mine at the caravan and camping show last year and would like to watch them again now that I’ve had a bit of a play with it - there’s so much that it can be used for).
* Looking for a few bits and pieces for the van in readiness for our trip.
* Having fun looking through the various vans and dreaming of what we might buy next. We’d like to buy a 5th-Wheeler when our kids are grown - you can get REALLY flash ones!!! Not that we’d go flash but they’re fun to look at. For those not familiar with them, they attach to the tray of a ute. It’s a good way to tow a big van, especially if you prefer to have a separate vehicle when stopped.
It should be lots of fun to spend the day together this way. It’s our “early anniversary present” to each other.
Speaking of holidaying, if you haven’t entered the Way2Go competition yet, there’s still time. In case you missed it, here is a repeat of the details as originally outlined in this post:
Way2Go are running a special competition EXCLUSIVELY for Lightening Online readers. What that means is that you SHOULD enter because your chances of winning a prize are quite HIGH.
Prizes up for grabs are:
- The five winning entrants will receive 1 x Rebel Sports voucher (valued at $100) and 1 x one year subscription to Way2Go magazine (valued at $35.70)
- The ten second place entrants will receive 1 x one year subscription to Way2Go magazine
So, what do you have to do?
Simply sign up to the Way2Go website and use the code word “lighteningonline” in the section “Promotional Code”. Then submit your own travel story to the website. Winning stories will be selected by the Way2Go team (check out the Terms and Conditions for more details).
You can find my first article “A Dream Is Born” on the website which details a little of our background story to the Big Trip we’re taking this year. I hope you’ll pop over there and leave me a comment (make me feel loved) and then sign up and submit your own story. I know many of you have great travel stories just busting to be shared.
Competition closes at 9am on 3 March, 2009. Unfortunately, this time round, this competition is only open to Australian Residents (apologies to my international readers - you know I still love you *mwah*). You can view the full Terms and Conditions here.
I really hope you’ll take the time to support this competition as the more successful it is, the more likely we’ll be offered other exclusive giveaways in the future. The total prize pool is in excess of $1000 which is obviously something I couldn’t offer on my own.

Depending on your budget and where you are going in Queensland and how long you want to “see” the reef… I can highly recommend Lady Elliot Island. You fly out from Bundaberg. It’s one of the very few islands (LEI. lady Musgrave Island, Heron Island and Green Island) ON the reef. All the others are continental islands with fringing reef.
Cairns offers some quick day trips to the reef where you can do some snorkeling. That’s probably the easiest (and cheapest) way to do it. You can also go out to Green Island by ferry from Cairns. Caravan park offices will have the local tourism brochures - but the Lonely Planet I sent you should also have some hints about day trips for snorkelling on the reef.
We LOVE LOVE LOVE caravan and camping shows!!! I absolutely dream of owning a gorgeous caravan one day, you’re definitely an inspiration there!! Only problem is we need a car big enough to tow one first LOL!!!!
But on another note I’ve been meaning to write about some of our amazing camping travels for way2go and I think your competition has just kicked me in the bum enough to sit down for a little while and do just that
Well I hope you and hubby enjoyed the caravan show as much as we did. Its sure had me inspired and guess what.. all I wanted to see was the Jayco vans as I recalled was the brand of yours… and I fell on love with one and when we got home i looked up your video and it was the same one……..! Fancy that!
Even hubby liked it as second best against the huge Winnebago. THere was also a magnificent 5 wheeler outside with a real dining table for 4 and 2 recliners…. and the bed was upstairs like royalty… i did wonder where the spa was though…..
I also saw some more Dreampot demos and didnt realise you could cook bread in it…. i must follow that up …… the golden syrup dumplings they gave us to taste teste were yummilicious!
We are dreaming but decided we had better make more use of our tent etc while we save….. or inherit, dare i say it!
Maybe you could post on camper trailer/ tenting tips one time….
Cant wait to hear your comments…. will comment again after I wade through the pile of pamphlets on my coffee table… LOL
L
Lynette I didn’t realise you were a fellow camper! We have been tenting it for years but this year we finally bought ourselves a camper trailer!
We are giving it it’s first run next weekend when we go to the Barossa for a Christening (I’m a God Parent, how exciting!). We have used my parents camper trailer many times but are really looking forward to fitting one out just the way we want to.
The big Winnebago trip is planned when the kids are off our hands. We are having trouble deciding whether we want a winnebago or a van. I want to take my cat! And he could happily sleep on the bed of a winnebago while we travel….plus I could go watch TV if the scenery isn’t very interesting. But with a van you can unhook and go see all sorts of places that a winnebago can’t go….decisions, decisions!
Sorry Jodi, I’ve hijacked your blog! I know you love me, so you won’t mind!
Wendy - Thanks. I’ll look into it. It’s most likely we’ll take a day trip from Cairns on a boat. We have to consider what will be most interesting for the kids too. I think they’ll be happy just to be able to say they’ve been there.
Stuffy - yeah, I’ve been going through that place by place and gotten lots of ideas from it already.
Prizetastic - the car is important. It was one of the things we looked at when purchasing our Pajero. Although the good thing about the caravan we bought is that it’s relatively small to tow compared to some of the thumping big full-sized vans you can buy.
Lynette - those 5th-wheelers are something else aren’t they! The worse thing was, it was so busy it was difficult to get a look in! What day did you go? As for the dreampot, I saw her put the dumplings in but didn’t get to try any. The bread is interesting although not sure if that’s something I could be bothered with while travelling. But it does go to show that you’re only limited by your imagination when it comes to what the dreampot can do. My biggest camping tip is to just “do it”. Don’t wait until you have the “right” equipment etc. Just make the time to do it and you’ll gradually aquire bits and pieces along the way. I think a lot of people go out and get kitted out with everything that opens and shuts and it sits in the shed. For the most part, simpler really is better (less effort to pack up and go). I’ll think about writing a general post about our adventures so far.
Sharon - Never be sorry for hijacking my blog - that’s all part of the blog community. I love that if I don’t post for a few days - some of your start talking to one another in the comments.
We’re a bit the same as you re a Winnebago vs a 5th-wheeler (for when we have no kids). Pros and Cons for each really. Have fun christening that camper trailer! They’re so much nicer than a tent!!!
Welcome home !
Think i have been dreaming all night of the many caravans and components i saw yesterday…. yes I also felt there were so many gimmicks one could but but never ever use….. but I did love those little weeny dish drainers…… great for kiddies…. and i also saw those foldalines……what a great idea.
Saw many a male walking back to their car with a box over each shoulder!
