Decluttering
I’m having a decluttering blitz at the moment.
It feels good.
To be honest, it’s been a while.
The best way to keep a home clutter free is to constantly declutter.
Yeah, well, I rarely do things the “best” way.
So, in the past few weeks, a LOT of stuff has gone into our landfill.
The good news is that I think this might finally help me turn around the bad spending spree I’ve been on for a few months now. Frugality has gone RIGHT out the window.
And I’ve been having trouble finding it in our overgrown shrubbery.
Anyway, my goal is to get at least a garbage bag load of “stuff” out the door each week.
I think we’re probably getting to the end of the “junk” and getting to the actual “decent stuff that others can make use of” type junk now. Toys and clothes that are outgrown. That kind of thing.
I’ve considered trying to sell some of it on ebay to raise money for our trip. But in all honesty, I think I’m better off giving it away. Getting it out of the house is giving me a LOT of satisfaction and curbing my desire to spend. So I think at the end of the day, this is the best way to deal with it.
My plan is to update you periodically to keep me accountable.
So far this week:
1 x garbage bag of rubbish
2 x grocery bags of clothes (to Vinnies)
1 x kitchen tidy bag of toys (to Vinnies)
I’m pretty happy with that effort. Mondays seems to be my day for getting enthusiastic so not sure if I’ll get motivated to do some more later in the week or not. We’ll see.
How do you deal with your clutter? Are you a hoarder or are you good at keeping clutter down? I know for me it’s a constant struggle.

I’m kind of a hoarder although I have been getting rid of stuff that i haven’t even looked at for a while. I got to thinking if i haven’t used it or looked at it or even got it out of the box or cupboard for at least 6 months then I don’t need it. I manage to keep the clutter down by not buying things. My problem is ornaments. I want to get rid of most of them, but hubby likes them, most are bits he’s brought home from the Browse’n'Save or found at garage sales. Like our stuffed toys. I fell in love with a baby chimpanzee (stuffed toy, not real) and brought him home from Coles. Because I love him, hubby has brought home from second hand shops and garage sales several more, and teddy bears too, because I mentioned once that I love teddies. Forgot to say that I didn’t actually want anymore than the one I had.
Well I can vary between hoarder and ruthless at times…. whenever i get the urge for either…… but Ifind it hard to part with things that I value and think noone else will…. even if I dont use it anymore.
I have been trying really hard to avoid those cheaper shops unless I know they have something I need, or else I buy unnecessarily and add more clutter to the clutter!
I like to think I am not a hoarder however if you looked up in the top of my pantry you would say otherwise as there are many icecream containers and other useful things….. that may come in handy one day……mmm
Its hard for me to part with things that my mother kept…. and used instead of Tupperware, or for the farm fruit, etc etc…. my mum finds a way to recycle everything… she is old school but also very frugal……and loves being creative……. I now know how she saved money and also made life fun for us in holidays when we cut up old cards, stuck the pics to boxes which we then stored toys in etc etc…. or used as desk storage….. I used to do more of this type of recycling when my boys were littler!
Noone frowned that they didnt match and we got a great satisfaction from the creative things.
Any helpful clues will help me so keep sending them in bloggers.
I declutter before birthdays and Christmas - as there is inevitably an influx of toys / clothing for the children that I need to make room for.
Usually tidy up at the change of each season also.
For me decluttering is about cleaning as well, so I empty a cupboard of its contents, clean the cupboard then sort out what is going to go back in, decluttering in the process.
Toys often get decluttered as I pack up each day - anything that is broken goes straight to the bin unless it is really precious then I try to repair it.
constant battle for me too.
I’m on a bit of a decluttering blitz lately too.
Good luck
I need to declutter so badly - especially my linen cupboards. Although I can’t get to one of them at the moment, our old washing machine is in front of it
Oh and the kids toys and other “stuff”. I am fighting the urge to spend about a week doing it all at once and trying to be more sensible about it by doing a little bit at a time.
Good luck with your efforts, sounds like you are doing really well - keep inspiring me
I don’t declutter - if you declutter once, you just have to declutter again later. Clutter (and disorder) has a natural gravity. I got a storage unit so that I could declutter the study and shed. Guess what? A year later study and shed are re-cluttered, but now there is also a storage shed full of stuff. The trick is to learn to live with the clutter - not to fight it!
