Good point, although Santa only brings one present for each person, and the rest are family presents. Board games and things like that.

Kin - that would have been a wise thing to do when my kids were younger. These days what they ask for is the more expensive stuff and I usually spend $20-$30 from Santa and a larger gift from us. I hate Santa always getting all the credit for the good stuff. ;)

I buy the presents from us way beforehand, then I wait until the see Santa and see what they've asked for.

This year it's a toy watch and a toy barbeque. Do you think Santa can find them? Instead I asked him to bring them a dolls house. I'm sure they'll love it.

Dina - kids are great aren't they? :)

Wendy - I know, it helps to be reminded. :)

Marita - LOL. Yeah, that is true.

Guera - yeah, I used to do that too (plant a seed so they really "wanted" what I'd bought)

Stuffy - that is the good thing with 2 of our kids having birthdays in January.

Gem - it's the downside to being so isolated that I really need to have my shopping done early. Lleyton is my hardest because he's not good at saying what he wants (or even knowing what he wants). He likes to be surprised and knows that if he tells me what he wants - he usually gets it. Although this year he's asked for a Kookaburra cricket bat (and won't be getting it because I've already shopped this year). But maybe for his birthday....

Bettina - yeah and when they're younger, they tend to flit from one thing to another more too don't they? Singstar Princess has been wanting a DS for a while now.

Emma - I'm a bit the same (unless it's out of my budget or I've already spent on something else). We have vacillated back and forth about getting SP a DS because they are on the expensive side. The worst thing is we decided to get her one for her birthday and I can't really swap Christmas and birthday around because all 3 are getting the same thing (digital cameras) for Christmas and it kind of mucks it up if she doesn't get one. I'm just hoping she'll be happy enough with a pink camera that it'll make up for any disappointment over not getting a DS. She only has to wait a few more weeks after Christmas until her birthday.

Oh I should add I also take into account how long they've wanted it for - if they're changing their minds, or it's a recent interest, I'd be less concerned than if they'd asked for it most of the year iykwim.

Oh - and - sweet story!

I like to try to get them what they want, if it's within the budget and I don't have a particular reason not to. :)

Now that my lot are getting older, I'm leaving off buying till I get an idea of what they want, but when they were littler, I did what Guera said about 'guiding' them lol

My kids usually have a pretty good idea of what they want a while before Christmas and their main present doesn't change, thankfully. I honestly can't remember whether they changed their mind much when they were little or not, I think if they did I did what Guera does, and sow the seed of an idea of what they want according to what I had already bought for them.

Of course I am usually so disorganised that Christmas shopping always happens the weekend before Christmas so last minute mind-changes can be accomodated (within reason of course :) )

Anything that is proposed past a certain point gets "rolled over" for next time.

I always have that dilemma too. My kids are still (just) young enough that I can subtly plant an idea in their head for what they might want to ask Santa for. ;) But Guerita always comes up with something last minute that I don't/can't get so I always stress that we don't get everything on our Santa list, but we're thankful for the things we do get. So far there hasn't been anything she truly, absolutely wanted so badly that she's disappointed she didn't get it. Usually she's so taken with all the stuff she does get from Santa and family that anything else is forgotten, but that may change as she gets older.
