Hope the party is fabulous.

My sister in law did a pirate party for her son last year. One thing she found is that the blood and gore themed food put the children off. They didn't want to drink the 'red blood' cordial or eat the 'sea slime green' jelly. At 4yo the party guests were mostly too young to appreciate it.

The veggie stick platter we called 'mini swords' and that was a hit - albeit mostly to play fight with.

A family tradition on my in laws side is to play 'Bang the Pot' at parties.

You put some lollies on the ground, cover them in a big saucepan. Then blindfold a child and give them a wooden spoon. They have to crawl around waving the spoon to try and bang the pot. Everyone else stands around calling 'warmer' if they get close and 'colder' if they are going in the wrong direction. When the spoon eventually hits the pot the blindfolded child wins the lollies under it. Then it is the next persons turn.

My son had a pirate party (also for his 5th birthday). We made little boats out of oranges which looked quite neat. You cut oranges in half, then make sails with a bit of paper on a toothpick and stick it into the centre of the orange. Of course you have to put the jolly roger on the flags!

You used to be able to buy those little fish shaped cracker biscuit things - I think we had some of those, along with chocolate coins/easter eggs for treasure (it's an April birthday!). For party bags I bought small wooden boxes from the $2 shop and the kids decorated them at the party then filled them with loot from the treasure hunt.

I hope your party is a great success, and that you are not too worn out by the end of it all!!

You could probably download a pirate treasure map. Do you think your local toy store would have a few of those plastic pirate swords? And trailerboy, as "pirate king" will need a captain's hat? Sounds like a lot of fun, can't wait to see the pictures.

We had those loot bags as show bags at our last school fete. They are good ones.

AS you are going a nautical theme, what about fish cocktail things for food as well - N went to a pirate party when he was 5 & they had these with oven chips. This mother also managed to find little bowls shaped like ships and had a mast & a sail in each bowl.

Also if it is hot you could throw cannon balls - black water balloons too.
