I find bottled water pretty convenient when we have arrived at netball to discover that the Princess has forgotten her water...again... Apparently remembering everything that she may possibly need is MY job. I have tried to get her to be responsible for her own stuff but it's just not working and causes unneccesary drama, so I just buy the water!

I try to avoid bottled water whenever I can and prefer to drink tap water. In Canberra the tap water is fine & tastes fresh. Our water catchments are pretty good.

My problem with bottled water is the cost involved in bringing it to us - there have been statistics flying around lately that say that you need quite a lot more water then the amount in the bottle to produce it. Also the concern about the waste from people drinking bottled water. I try to fill up a drink bottle from home when I am going away.

I do agree that a lot of water doesn't taste good, and so when we travel I will buy bottled, or if we are camping we fill up a drum of water from my house - this is drinking water only & we will generally use local water for washing up etc. DBF lives in a town outside Canberra & their water is truely disgusting, I will not drink that either.

So I guess I am trying to minimise the use of bottled water & I will always try water when I am travelling to see if it is OK before purchasing a bottle.

Snoskred - Ewwww!!! I don't blame you! I used to have a water filter thingy at our old place for taking impurities out of the water. But it was painfully slow and big (terracotta pot thing) and I don't have room for it here. Plus with the newer tanks there hasn't been the same need.

Kendall - sounds good. :) Will have to see how things pan out when it gets closer (no route has been decided yet).

Mark - that sounds really interesting.

River - Adelaide tap water would have to be one of the worst!!! I wouldn't drink it either. YUK!

Adelaide tap water doesn't taste nice to me and I find I have gastro type reactions when I drink it so I buy water for drinking. I get the Picadilly brand in the 10 litre cask and fill my bottles from that to take to work. I wash and re-use the bottles until they start to taste funny, then I'll buy a bottle of water and start the refill process again. Hubby has cast iron guts, so drinks the tap water.

We have actually bought a machine that condensates water out of the air as we still live in Brisbane until our Strawbale House is finished. We have bought that machine because we just absolutely hated the taste of the Brisbane town water.

For quite some time we only had under sink filters but when the Brisbane city council and QLD government started pushing water fluoridation, we got a bit scared. Through researching water fluridation on the net we have found out that basically they use a poisinous by-product of aluminium production to fluoridate the town water.

We are now mostly drinking water freshly condensed from the moisture in the air.

When we lived out bush all our water came from a bore that was sooooo deep in the ground that the water was the purest nicest stuff ever. When we moved to Rockhampton and lived in town for a few months we all had horrible tummy upsets for about the first 6-8 weeks which we attributed to drinking town water. Now we're very blessed to live out of town and only have rainwater. In fact my DH, who is away most weeks for work, takes a huge container of our own water with him as he can't stand what comes out of the tap anywhere he goes.

BTW when you do go on your big trip we'd love to have you come and stay if you end up near here. Free accommodation and free rainwater, now that's frugal!

Our local water tends to leave pink, orange and yellow mould in the sink. Therefore I am very reluctant to drink it.

I have a Sunbeam water chiller and filter unit which I use for all my drinking water at home needs, and I buy bottles to have on hand for when we go out.

Water is the only thing I drink 99% of the time - I drink one or two cups of coffee a day, and maybe *one* can of coke a month, sometimes one every two months. I used to drink 2 cans of coke a day so that was a big change for me. :)
