City Cousins Visit The Country Cousins
Yesterday my brother brought his two girls down to the farm for a visit. It has been almost 2 years since we’ve seen them. They live quite a distance away from us. The youngest has never been to the farm and the older one has only been to stay once, over 3 years ago.
So we thought it would be fun to show the “city cousins” a bit of what life on the farm is like.
Here are the kids on the back of the ute, ready to go feeding sheep.
My 4 year old niece hanging over the side of the ute watching the sheep eat the grain. The ute is barely moving at this stage (for anyone concerned about safety issues).
One of the great perks of living on a farm is that our kids get to “drive” the ute rather young. Here Farmboy is setting the ute in motion so that our 4-year old niece can have a drive.
“Look daddy, I’m driving”. A is very intense as she attempts to steer the ute over toward the sheep. That’s my brother hanging his head in the window, enjoying the fun his daughter’s seem to be having.
“I can’t believe I’m driving a REAL CAR” says my almost 7-year old niece. Mum might be in China but can you really top driving a REAL car????
Here’s Singstar Princess with her cousin Z playing with a couple of lambs we brought in from the paddock.
Farmboy showed the girls milk coming from the mother of one of the lambs. Later in the day the 4-year old stated “milk comes from a cow, not sheep”, with a very serious look on her face. She must have spent an hour or more trying to process that confusion. It was all rather cute.
Farmboy showed the visitors how a sheep gets shorn. And showed off his growing bald spot for posterity’s sake.
“A” thought the shearing plant was a little loud. My boys are taking it in their stride. Singstar Princess has seen it all before and is playing in the background.
Leighton showing the cousins how it’s done.
“A” decides she would like to have a go. As long as Uncle Farmboy turns off the noise!
Some things are the same - city or country. Cousins dressing up.
I think you could say a good day was had by all.

Great to see you all had a great day. No wonder you are tired today! I’m not in the least bit surprised.
Pink has survived her first day, she came in smiling which is a good sign.
I love seeing city kids on the farm for the first time. I have to admit I get a bit nervous when DH lets my kids drive the ute - but c6 loves “driving” (steering) around the paddocks in both the ute and the tractor. I have to keep reminding myself that when I was growing up, all my farm friends knew how to drive by the time they were 8.
Bwah ha about the sheeps milk thing - does she know that some people even drink milk from goats? Then tell her about humans to really freak her out.
Classic
They look like they’re all having a ball. What a great experience. My son (almost 7) still talks about the time my father let him “drive” the ute when they were feeding the cows (he was 3 at the time).
Fun times. Farms are great for learning to drive aren’t they? My granddaughter learnt to handle the 4WD at her Nono’s property when she was 12. Now my grandson is learning the same way.
I am so glad that my family still lives in the country (Mildura) so that my very city children, get to see where food comes from etc. There are certain freedoms the country offers that you just can’t replicate in the city.
Looks like they were having a great time! Are they close even though they don’t see each other much?
It looks like everyone had such a good time! Thanks for the pictures, this is about as close as I’ve ever gotten to a real farm.
I love it when youngins get to experience REAL LIFE! Sounds like you all had a great time!
Hey Lightening, I always look forward to your blog post every day and love reading them. I’m Michelle in Melbourne on the FA list. I don’t post much but love reading the digest every day. The kids look like they all had an absolute ball, and I’m so jealous. I would love to live on a farm!
I got given a spinning wheel on the weekend…. woohoo!!!! Would you be interested in selling me some fleece? If not that’s okay I just thought I’d ask. I haven’t a clue how to use it and I’m waiting on a part first. But after that I’ll be off! Can’t wait to get started! Have a great day. Michelle xx
Sharon - I’m kinda tired of feeling tired though. So pleased that pink survived her day. It’s tough being a teenager - so glad I’m passed all that!!! Although I still have it all to come from a mother’s perspective.
Gnometree - I’m a nice aunty - not into freaking my nieces out. LOL. As for driving - most of the time I don’t see it and this time it was my idea. It’s so slow and so open that it’s very safe (especially with me sitting in the passenger seat).
Journeyer - I hope they remember. Farms can be great places for kids, even if it’s just for a visit.
River - I don’t actually know. I learnt to drive in Melbourne!!!! But it seems like a great place to learn to drive. I know Farmboy was driving by around 10 (fully driving I mean, not just steering). Leighton is just starting to get the hang of it now. His height makes it difficult in the manual ute.
Planning Queen - agreed. I never imagined myself raising children in the country. But I can see the benefits now.
Kez - It’s 2 years since they’ve seen each other and they don’t talk on the phone or anything (yet). But they do talk about one another (and when are we going to see …… It’s a shame in a way that there is such a distance between them.
Jenn - Glad you enjoyed them. I’m terrible at remembering to take the camera. Blogging is helping me with that!
Christina - Yeah, it is good. We’ll do the reciprocal sometime and the city kids can show our country kids life in the city.
Michelle - Thanks for your kind words. Life on a farm has it’s good points. But also it’s not so great points. The spinning wheel sounds fabulous!!! I’ve emailed you privately in regard to wool.
How cool! I have some great childhood memories of visiting relatives (actually they were friends of relatives I think) on their farm! Riding dirtbikes, driving dads landcruiser & the farm ute, the animals, bonfires etc etc.
They had a great time visiting us too! Weren’t in Sydney then though….but to them it was a full blown city lol.
Sounds like a great day
That was a really enjoyable post
I think almost all of the kids from properties knew how to drive in the classes that I taught. We were having a conversation about causes of greenhouse gases and cars being one of them and I certainly showed my city side what I said, “When you drive…well not that you drive but when your parents drive you somewhere.”
They set me straight very quickly!
A few weekends after that I was driven around on a 4-wheeler by one of the boys (at the property I mentioned in another comment) and it was certainly a great experience for both of us I think for him to be the teacher and so competent at everything and me the bumbling student.
awesome photos babe. Technically my kids have lived in the country all their lives and never experienced a real farm.
Great that your rellies got to! And looks like they had a ball!
what a fabuulous thing for kids to get to do all those things. i wish i had grown up on a farm. i was lucky enough to get to ride a friends horses as a youngster. love the outdoor life!
What a great post! Loved the photo story. Looks like your nieces and children had a great day!

Oh, wow! I know you’re not feeling 100% atm, but have you considered the possibility of hosting farmstays for families? I know we would enjoy a visit, and pay for the opportunity!!
