Are You A Fan Of The Royal Family?
Image via WikipediaToday is NOT the Queen’s Birthday. But we celebrate it anyway. I think it was the birthday of the King or a past Queen or something like that. So most people get a day off. Apparently farmers are “not public” so they don’t do “public holidays”. According to my Father In Law anyway. Farmboy is a bit better at “doing” public holidays. Unless we have nothing much happening and then sometimes he’ll work because he can.
My brother is coming to visit today. We haven’t seen him or his girls in 2 years. He lives in Sydney and hasn’t been over this way for 2 years. So I’m sitting her in my PJ’s while Farmboy gets organised for our visitors.
I will wake up in a minute and help him.
So, my question for today is: Are you a Royalist? Do you LOVE the Royal Family, Hate the Royal Family or have no opinion either way?
As a girl, I was always a fan. I dreamt of one day growing up and marrying a real live Prince so that I could be a REAL Princess.
Princess Diana was my absolute idol. I thought she was just so amazing and beautiful and poised and well, I wanted to be just like her (back in the day when I had NO IDEA how awful her life really was).
I was pretty devastated when she died. I think my passion for the Royal family died along with her.
I remember well the day of her funeral. We were away with friends staying in several cabins in the one park. As the only married couple amongst this group, we had our own cabin while the others all bunked together in 2 other cabins.
I went back to our cabin to watch the funeral in privacy. And cried.
When it was over, everyone piled into our cabin. When they left I threw up. I was 20 weeks pregnant with our first child and that was the last time I threw up (for that pregnancy).
It’s funny how some things just stick with you isn’t it?
Anyway, this wasn’t supposed to be a post about funerals or throwing up.
I just wondered what your thoughts on the Royal Family are (and they can be thoughts on ANY Royal Family - not just the Wales ones).
Australia has been debating whether or not we should cut our ties with the Royal Family or not. I guess one day it’s likely we will become a Republic. I used to be dead against the idea but now I’m not so sure.
So go ahead, discuss. Do you like the Royal family? Who is your favourite Royal? Do you have an opinion on Australia becoming a Republic? Will we lose this public holiday if we become a Republic? What WOULD the Paparazzi do if they didn’t have the Royals to give them article fodder???
I gotta go get dressed now and do a quick tidy up. But I’ll be back later.

The papps have plenty of of other celebrities to chase around, I’m sure they’ll be fine. Of course if people stopped buying all the gossip mags, maybe they’d finally go away but that’s another issue entirely.
I don’t have much opinion about the Royals and the whole republic rebate, don’t think it’ll make all that much difference for us either way. We’d lose this holiday but would probably gain some sort of “Independence Day” similar to the USA. As long as it’s in either June or July to break up the middle of the year, I’m fine.
As I get older, I head toward the idea of us becoming a republic. We have very little ties with the UK for any other reason, apart from the old adage of it beingthe mother country.
The UK does not get a holiday for the Queen’s Birthday. Why do we?
Unless I see or hear something in any of the media forms I never give the royal family a single thought. They’re just so far removed from my way of life.
I’m a bit like you. My love for them died along with Diana. Even though she was a tragic figure, she was a well groomed and poised tragic figure! The others just don’t seem to have the same attraction to me.
Although having said that, I’m a bit of a fan of Mary. Love to see what she’s doing and wearing!
I’m very anti-royal. Why should these people enjoy such privilege just because their ancestors outmurdered and outthieved all their rivals? I make a point of refusing to toast the Queen when such toasts are made at functions - I just stay seated and don’t raise my glass. Bring on the revolution I say, and line them up against the wall (well maybe thats going a bit far, so at least bring on the republic)
I’m definitely a Republican so far as Australia is concerned but having said that I love looking at photos/hearing stories of the Belgian royal family and I enjoy reading things Princess Mary. I think because it is a life -so- far removed from mine?
I think it’s tragic Princess Di died when and how she did and the world lost a good woman that day. I think it’s even more tragic that her death and funeral completely overshadowed the death of Mother Teresa.
From a Canadian perspective I am an UEL (United Empire Loyalist) on 3 sides of my family. Which for those who don’t know, we fled the American Colonies during the revolution and headed north to Upper Canada (present day Ontario) and Nova Scotia. I guess you could say we’re royalists in our blood — from a historical perspective.
My mum still collects the royal magazines every so often, and when the Queen is on TV, both my parents will watch/listen to her speak. When I traveled to Scotland last year we made a point to see the Castle of Mey, the Queen Mum’s home which is now a Royal Trust.
As for myself I don’t really think about the royal family, but I would never want Canada to become a Republic. Canadians pride themselves on ‘not being American’ thus we’ll stick with the Commonwealth.
Our ‘Queen’s Birthday’ is called Victoria Day and is celebrated in May. Many communities will put on a big show of it complete with historical Victorian costumes etc.. It is the ushering in of Summer and we all head to our cottages/camps/cabins to bring on Summer. I would hate to loose this holiday.
Cheers,
Maggie
I love reading about the Royal Family. I think it’s so interesting. Although I do feel like the media made Diana’s life miserable.
Diana was my favorite. She seemed real like us. Her sons as well. The others are just there and don’t seem as genuine.
Great post..

L, when my Mum took me to my first real hairdresser (as opposed to her hacking away at it at the kitchen table…she was quite good, but really…..) at the age of about 12, I requested a Lady Diana do’. I love the symbolism and tradition of the royal family, but would be happy enough to enjoy it at a distance in England, and to have a republic here where the traditions of an ancient rite have no potential effect on our democratic system. p.s. I still have the two womens weekly royal baby specials from William & Harry.
Honestly, I don’t follow the royal family, but Diana’s death and the time leading up to it was sad. I never dreamed of being a princess or wanting any special treatment either. Great discussion to have though and hey thanks for commenting on my blog and following me on twitter
Hmm….I’m a big fan of Mary too. Not that I follow gossip mags but I do think she is beautiful and poised and just seems like a genuinely nice person.
I thought William might be the saving grace for the Windsor’s but his more recent carry on’s with his brother have shed doubt in my mind.
I appreciate everyone’s thoughts on the discussion. It’s quite an interesting topic to me. Feel free to add any further thoughts or comments if you have them.
OUr very intelligent second minister for everything here (education, sport & rec, planning etc etc, our chief minister is minister for nearly everything else) declared that the Queen’s birthday holiday should be changed to Kids Day - don;t really like that idea - my kids get enough attention every other day. He is also the minister that gave Canberra a public holiday on Melbourne Cup Day.
ROyal Family doesn’t bother me, I really have no interest & don;t care whether we are a republic or not.
I have a weird (morbid?) fascination with the Royals. I watched Di and Fergie tie the knot on telly, even though i was just a kid. I remember what i was doing when i heard the news of Di’s death. My family and I watched the funeral on telly too. I adore Princes William and Harry, and have a grudging respect for the Queen. I absolutely LOVED the Queen Mum. She exuded class and character during a very difficult time in our history. I had the utmost respect for her.
Having said that, I am fiercely proud of being Australian, and will happily bag the ‘whingeing Poms’ any day! As I said, it’s weird.
I am such a Big fan of the British Royal family and othe royal families of the world.
I like posting comments on You tube instead of British Royal Blog. I collect their DVDS and magazines plus books of Anastasia. Sometimes I can learn from What People say in You tube regarding Royal HIstory.
