Sharon - do keep me posted. Hang on, that was last night! Where's my posted???

River - yeah, I don't know what the answer is these days. It's like kids aren't free to be kids quite the same. Too much programmed time (organised stuff) and not enough time to just explore. That's why I LOVE bringing our kids up on the farm.

Amy - yes, he's not bad. My heart goes to my throat numerous times a day but he seems to know his own limits well so I guess I just need to trust him more. :)

Now that's talent, I would have broken something within the first five seconds of trying to ride my bike down a slide lol

It's great when kids are allowed to do their own thing. Mine all did and I had so much free time because they were all off somewhere doing "stuff", getting dirty, learning, experiencing. I hardly ever saw them. they did have limits, but these were very basic. Don't go down to the creek behind the base (army base) because that's where the older kids hung out in cars with beer and pot, be home before the sun goes down, if there's uncontrollable bleeding CALL ME. They all grew up just fine.

Kate - yeah, it's a real problem the whole "wrapping kids in cotton wool" scenario. I get what you're saying re the teeth. No matter how much we protect them, accidents happen. It's like we're trying to be super human or something. One of the great things about bringing kids up on a farm is that it gives them plenty of space to learn and explore. Of course, that doesn't come without it's dangers too.... I've heard stories of when Farmboy and our neighbour were teenagers that are enough to send a mother to an early grave!!!!

Babyamore - sounds like the know how to have fun. :) How to their clothes go when they slide on their bellies? Or is it smooth?

Stuffy - that made me laugh!!!! Actually ours doesn't seem to be too bad. And Princess Singstar was about 18 months old when she figured out if she leant forward she could get more speed. Leighton has always been less of a risktaker.

Cathy - I usually find it hard to give my kids some space. I'm a bit of a panic merchant myself. But I'm learning....

HisPrincess - lol You are incorrigible!!!

Bettina - I have started the first ever order of KOBMA (Kids Of Blogging Mothers Anonymous). ;)

Jenn - indeed :)

Oh that looks like ace fun!
You know there has been an ongoing discussion for the last few years within Early Childhood Education realms about how children these days are never allowed to take risks.... and how that affects their play, their learning and their over all development. I probably seem rather blasé about my kids and risk taking - I am often heard to say 'what's the worst that can happen? a broken bone?'.... and considering one of my girls smashed in her three front teeth at the library (yes the very dangerous library!) I figure you can't ever predict when and where it will happen so just go with it, let them live a little, they will never learn if they don't challenge themselves!

We have one of those slides, and they have so much friction that riding a car down it is probably the only way a kid is going to finish on the slide in less than half an hour!

My Mother used to worry when my children played like that but I love to see it - it ( using things inventively -not sure thats a word) shows they have imagination and don't have to be entertained all the time.

Now I see the same things happening in my grandchildren and don't bat an eyelid :)
