Ha, my kids would think that all their christmases had come at once if I made them playdough
They have been asking for playdough since we moved here in march! and I have not given in to their pleading - yes Im a mean mum!
But you may have just inspired me to relent and give in to their wishes

Edi - tartaric acid is also known as cream of tartar or potassium hydrogen tartrate. I think it helps to make the playdough softer and more malleable. It is also an antioxidant so playdough made without it may harden a little quicker. If you can’t find any I would make the playdough without it and see what happens.

Little Cat - how long it lasts will depend a little on how much it is played with. It’s best to store in an airtight container (I keep mine in Tupperware). We usually get quite a few months and up to a year out of a batch of playdough before needing to throw it out. However, this batch is being played with daily by 3 children so I’m not sure how long it will last. You also tend to lose bits of it each time it is played with so over time the amount of dough you have declines.

Sueblimely - isn’t it amazing how the simple things can have amazing results with children. I still love sitting down with the kids and having a play myself.

My own kids loved playdough and I always had to have fresh supplies on hand. They enjoyed the process of making it too. I later regularly looked after 3 very boisterous pre-schoolers whose mum found them difficult to cope with and hated mess of any sort, including playdough. Out came the playdough virtually every time they visited. It was wonderful for calming them down - as long as I had enough dough and cutters etc to go round.

That’s a great idea! My little one is a bit young yet but I’ve saved the recipe so I can make it for him next year. How long does it last before it starts to go hard and crumbly? Or does it stay nice and supple. It’s 30 odd years since I last used playdough lol

Oh River, what a wonderful thing you did for those mums! It’s not easy to find people who will volunteer their time like that. It is hard when the numbers get too much though…a shame they weren’t more sensitive to that.

Thanks for the feedback about the blog folks. Much appreciated. Sent me into a bit of a spin for a while there but I think I now know why. Now I just have to find out how not to do it again.

Kate - mint does seem to be a very Christmassy scent doesn’t it. I wonder where that all started from?

Yes, thank you, the colour is fixed now.
I remember making playdough years ago for my kids. Later when the older three were in school, I was approached by my neighbour and asked if I would babysit a group of kids while the mums held their bible study session. A few mums, not too many kids, I said yes. I made playdough in several colours and took it along. Along with a few other activities I kept those small children amused and happy for the whole hour. I was invited to continue being the minder, so I did. But word got around that the group had found someone who could watch the kids, keep them happy, and clean up after snack time. So several mums who had dropped out came back and the kids numbers swelled quite a bit. In a few weeks I was minding about a dozen little ones aged 1 to 4. Although I hated to let them down (the mums), I was quite glad when hubby announced a transfer to another state. Then a few years later, back in Victoria, I bumped into one of the original mums. Sucker that I am, I started over with a new group of kids, new playdough supplies………

Just for some positive feedback, the colours for me are fine. As the page is loading all I can see is the hot-pink/magenta kind of colour, which is the background, but when it loads its all fine, beeeeeutiful infact
